New video, new project, and SH #6! Let’s go!!!
Hi friends and fans! Just noticed that it’s only been a month (what?!?) since I last posted which actually, is what I had intended all along. So now that I’m retired, I can spend more time updating this blog.
Let’s start with a new video to my Writing for Comics series! This past year, I entered a couple of my books, Blank and Dr. Dream: The Collection, into a few contests and wanted to share my experiences with them. Overall, it was really positive, though these may not be for everyone. In the video, I go through some of the reasons why writers and creators may (or may not) want to enter their books into a contest. Here’s the episode:
As most of you know, I’ve always got something creative cookin’ and right now there’s a couple of pots simmering. The first was actually a suggestion from my friend and fellow Scattered Comics creator James Burton. “We should really find a way to turn your Writing for Comics series into a book.” I felt pretty dumb for not figuring this out sooner, but this is why James is my friend. And thinking about it further, this will be a great opportunity for James to reiterate much of the great advice he gave to the students at my old stomping grounds, Mira Loma High School, when he came as a guest speaker for our comics and graphic novel units. Together, we hammered out an outline, and I’ve been working on the book a section at a time. Scattered Comics did something similar with a book called Comics vs Manga, but this book will be geared towards the complete comic publishing experience—from writing, to drafting, to drawing. to publishing—suitable for all ages and for all abilities. I am very excited for this project, and I'll keep you posted on our progress.
The other pot that’s simmering is a project Jason Dube and I are working on called Hellforce, a Shadow Hunters story. For some time, I had thought if I ever wanted to collaborate with Jason, it would be something to do with his Shadow Hunters series—the most popular title in the Scattered Comics catalogue. But wading around in someone’s else’s story arc is, well, tricky. I cautiously asked permission and to my surprise, he gave the go ahead. I pitched him an idea, wrote a script, and we’re moving forward with the first book! As an added bonus, my daughter Talia will be drawing the cover.
If you’re not familiar with the Shadow Hunters series, you’re in luck—because right now Issue #6 is live on Kickstarter! Check out the trailer!
Looks good, huh? You can get your hands on all previous books as well as some alternate covers, and lots of goodies! Check out the campaign that runs for just 17 more days! Here’s the link: http://kck.st/3XiqZJG.
As always, thanks for reading and keep creating!
